I'm a British writer and translator who has lived in Brazil since 1998. Over the past 25 years I've built a professional career working between English and Portuguese — translating major legal, financial and corporate documents for some of Brazil's largest companies. Language, in other words, is not a hobby for me. It's what I do for a living.
That professional background shapes the way I teach. I'm not interested in getting you to "communicate" — most of my students can already do that. I'm interested in getting you to the level where a native speaker can't tell you apart. That requires understanding not just vocabulary and grammar but the deeper patterns: the way Portuguese shapes your instincts even when you're trying to think in English.
I'm also a published author — my first book, written in English about life in Brazil, came out in 2026. Writing a book is a different order of challenge from writing an email or sitting an exam. If you want to understand what genuinely fluent, natural written English looks and feels like, that's the level I'm working at every day.
I'm patient, direct and I don't waste your time. My classes are structured but flexible — I follow your progress, not a syllabus.

Most English teachers will teach you English. I'll teach you your English — the specific patterns, habits and blind spots that come from being a native Portuguese speaker trying to think in a completely different language.
After 25 years working as a professional translator between English and Portuguese, I know exactly where things go wrong. Not in general — for you, specifically. The way Brazilians handle prepositions. The articles that don't exist in Portuguese but are everywhere in English. The false friends, the phonetics, the moments where your brain translates word-for-word and produces something a native speaker would never say.
My approach is diagnostic first. Before I teach you anything, I want to understand how you're currently using English — what you're getting right, and where the interference from Portuguese is pulling you off course. Every student gets a different class because every student has a different set of problems.
I've spent 27 years living between two languages and two cultures — long enough to write a book about Brazil for a British audience. That means I understand not just the linguistics but the thinking: the way Brazilians structure an argument, tell a story, soften a refusal. Knowing that makes me a better teacher, because I can see exactly where your instincts are leading you astray.
