Mais sobre Silvia

Hi, I’m Silvia! I was born in Slovakia, then my family moved to Canada when I was 2 years old.

English is not the first language I started learning — nor the second. The first kindergarten I went to had 30 kids, and 25 of them were Chinese. Can you guess what language I started picking up? But of course, my parents moved me to another kindergarten as soon as they realized. And that's how I narrowly avoided becoming a Slovak-born Canadian who spoke fluent Chinese.

Instead, English became my native language. I do everything in English — work, play, study, dream, think. But I still had early exposure to several other languages — Slovak spoken at home, and French taught at school. These beginnings sparked my fascination (read: obsession?) with languages.

And so I went to university for translation. Spurred by both passion and indecision (and perhaps a teensy bit of insanity), I enrolled in every single foreign language course they offered, from Portuguese to Japanese. I did three internships in translation and English teaching, in Barcelona, Bremen, and Valencia. I really found myself in the work, and thus began my career as a freelancer.

I did my final semester in Bologna, Italy. Having experienced almost 20 Canadian winters with -30 degree weather and 2-meter high snow banks, I wasn’t so eager to add one more to the tally. So after I graduated I decided to stick around in Europe a bit longer, and ended up staying. Now I’m based in Bratislava, and I work full-time as a freelance online English teacher, translator, editor, and copywriter.

That’s enough about me for now — if you’d like to get to know me more, just send me a message and I’d be happy to arrange your first lesson!

►MORE ABOUT MY TEACHING MINDSET
I would call my mindset towards languages progressive. We can prescribe the rules of a language, but at the end of the day, we must also observe it — if a textbook tells you that something is incorrect, but the entire North American continent uses it, can we really call it “wrong”?

I also think nobody should be embarrassed of making mistakes in a foreign language (or even their own!). Of course we should strive to improve, but the end goal is not perfection — it’s communication. It would be a shame to miss out on building bonds and sharing laughs from fear of conjugating wrong.

To that end, I do correct my students, as that’s partially what I’m there for! But we will always maintain a positive and relaxed atmosphere that welcomes mistakes as a tool for learning. I myself make mistakes in every language I speak (just wait to hear me speak yours and you’ll see! ;) )

►EDUCATION
✧ Bachelor’s degree in Translation from the University of Ottawa with 3 practicums (2013-2018)

I am very passionate about my work, and that’s why I love taking courses to learn from experts and continue developing my skills. I’ve completed lots of courses and certificates in teaching English with different focuses. This lets me see different methods for approaching English and gives me an idea of the different kinds of lessons, exercises, and learning styles to choose the best one for each student.

►HOW I STARTED TEACHING
My career in teaching started back in high school in Canada. In my senior years, and later in university, I gave private lessons to children and teenagers (for English, French, Math, and playing the piano).

During university, I did three internships related to languages. The last one was in Valencia, where I gave weekly Business English lessons to 15 senior employees in a multinational eCommerce company.

I started giving private online English lessons in my third year of university. When I graduated in 2018, I started working full-time as a freelance English teacher, translator, editor, and copywriter.

In 2019, I also started teaching with Berlitz, one of the top language academies in the world, with more than 500 centers across 70 countries.

►SUMMARY OF MY EXPERIENCE
✧ 5+ years of experience giving private lessons in American English online
✧ 5000+ hours of private lessons in American English online

►MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My lessons are all based on one simple premise: you become good at what you practice.

If you only practice doing grammar exercises, then you’ll become good at doing grammar exercises! And if you practice speaking English a lot, then you’ll become great at speaking English.

This is where a lot of textbooks, courses, and teachers fall short. They focus too much on exercises that do improve your English, but not in the way you want. (It’s like doing abdominal exercises and expecting your cardio to improve!) Of course, exercises are useful to learn the components of language. But they must be used in the context of your goal.

I've learned this from personal experience learning languages, and I plan my English lessons with this in mind. I put a lot of effort into getting to know each student’s goals, from our talk in the first lesson to getting regular feedback. We stay on track and always keep moving towards your goals.

►LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION
I do my classes as much as possible in English, to maximize your practice with the language. However, if needed, I can also communicate in Spanish, Italian, French, Slovak, German, Russian, and a bit in Portuguese and Chinese.

I have personally taken more than 10 courses and long-term private lessons in these languages. This has given me first-hand experience with various methods and exercises. I know what works and what doesn’t work, and I can find the best ways to help you overcome your difficulties.

Thanks to my knowledge of these languages, I also understand the reason behind many typical mistakes that people of different linguistic backgrounds make. I can explain them with better insight, and find tricks to help you fix them.

►CLASS MATERIALS
I will provide you with all the materials you will need for our classes. (Except if you wish to work with a textbook, in which case you will need to buy a copy of it).

I use material from different real life and academic sources, but I have also made a lot of my own material, based on my experience. This variety will let us pick the best resources for your goals.

With each class, you will receive a document with notes on what we have learned, your mistakes and my corrections. You can access and review these documents anytime from any device.

If you’d like to have homework to study outside of class, I can give you exercises and digital tools. These can include reading, listening, grammar, vocabulary, writing, videos, and more.

►MY LESSONS IN 10 PRINCIPLES
I am passionate about my work and I always aim to have a positive impact on my students. My lessons are based on the 10 principles below.

✧(1) - We will focus on your objectives and needs. I don’t waste time with exercises or topics that aren’t useful for you. You’ll move towards your goals with every lesson.

✧(2) - You will gain fluency in speaking. The biggest benefit of one-on-one lessons is the possibility for us to interact throughout the whole lesson! You’ll be able to take full advantage of this.

✧(3) - You will gain confidence in your weakest skills. Whatever they are, I fit them into your lessons to make sure you build a strong overall level.

✧(4) - You will learn not just “textbook English”, but also colloquial phrases, words, and expressions that native speakers use in real life. You’ll be able to speak in a natural way.

✧(5) - I give intuitive explanations you'll easily understand. I know several other languages and I can explain English vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and typical mistakes from your perspective.

✧(6) - You will make visible and steady progress. My lessons are not separate units on random topics, but they build on each other. Over time and with your hard work, you’ll see great improvement!

✧(7) - You will be able to apply everything you learn in real life. I teach grammar and vocabulary in context so you know how and when to use it in conversation.

✧(8) - You will maintain your English through time. We will keep using what you learn and review from different angles. You won’t be learning new things just to forget them the next week.

✧(9) - Our lessons will be well adapted to the online medium. I use interactive digital tools to not only eliminate the barriers of learning online, but take full advantage of them.

✧(10) - We will have fun! :-) I believe learning a language takes effort, but should still be a fun experience. I do everything I can to make a positive atmosphere so you look forward to our lessons.

►TYPES OF LESSONS
I specialize in teaching English at the advanced level. But I also offer classes for the basic and intermediate level. I have experience with a wide variety of lesson types and goals:

~ Lacking confidence or practice in speaking English?
✦ CONVERSATION LESSONS ✦
Build your fluency and confidence in conversation. We practice speaking English naturally. I correct your mistakes and show you the most natural ways to express something. We learn vocabulary and grammar only by correcting mistakes, learning words you didn’t know, and answering your questions.
(1) - We speak freely, as if we were having a coffee together and talking about life.
(2) - We discuss topics that I prepare (this may include some relevant grammar / vocabulary).
(3) - We discuss articles, videos, podcasts, etc. that were given previously as homework.

~ Want to impress your colleagues and get ahead at work?
✦ BUSINESS ENGLISH LESSONS ✦
Learn to speak English with confidence in work situations relevant to you. These can include phone calls, meetings, making requests, apologizing, clarifying information, handling complaints, agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting new ideas, negotiating, etc. We do simulations for both oral and written scenarios and cover the necessary vocabulary and grammar to handle them comfortably. Of course, we also work on pronunciation, formality, and expressions of politeness to make sure you make a positive impression. (Search for “Business English” to find my separate page with more details.)

~ Preparing for a stay in an English speaking country?
✦ LESSONS FOR TRAVEL OR IMMIGRATION ✦
Learn to confidently manage situations that you’ll find yourself in abroad. These could include shopping in a store, visiting the doctor, making plans with someone, accepting or rejecting an invitation, getting to know someone, describing your weekend, asking for directions, dealing with problems, etc. We cover the grammar and vocabulary necessary for you to communicate easily in these scenarios. We practice them through simulations in both dialogues and written communication, so that you know how to handle each scenario with confidence.

~ Starting a degree taught in English soon?
✦ LESSONS FOR THE ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT ✦
Prepare yourself for success in an English academic environment. We focus on academic vocabulary and grammar that will help you understand lectures, read research papers, make presentations, and write essays. Naturally this includes all four skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing), with particular emphasis on speaking and writing. We also compare ways to say something in formal, casual, written, and oral contexts. You’ll understand the subtle differences in advanced language and know how to express yourself accurately in each kind of situation.

~ Feeling lost and anxious about your English exam?
✦ ENGLISH EXAM PREPARATION LESSONS ✦
Increase your chances of getting a high score on your IELTS, Cambridge, or TOEFL exam. In these lessons, we focus on speaking simulations, answering your questions, improving your weaknesses, and practicing strategies to easily boost your score. I have taken 12+ courses and certifications by past IELTS examiners to prepare students for English exams. (Search for “IELTS” or “TOEFL” to see my separate pages with more details).

~ Struggling to put sentences together?
✦ GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT LESSONS ✦
Become a master of using grammar to express yourself flexibly, accurately, and naturally. Grammar always requires looking at theory, but you don’t need a teacher to sit and watch you do grammar exercises — so I give them to you to do in your free time. This way we can maximize our time in class. We go over any questions, then we practice situations where the grammar is necessary or useful, turning the theory into skills. You’ll become proficient at using the grammar in a communicative context, and recognize when you need to use it.

~ Got lots to say, but lacking the words?
✦ VOCABULARY IN CONTEXT LESSONS ✦
Expand your vocabulary to easily express your ideas. Vocabulary can be taught through conversation lessons. Or, we can choose topics relevant to you and learn words to help you talk about them. I can give you sets of expressions to study before class, as well as exercises to help review them in your free time. I also provide a free digital tool which can help you easily practice the words from any device. We focus heavily on discussion, making sure you know how to use the words flexibly, accurately, and naturally in conversation.

~ Feeling insecure because people struggle to understand you?
✦ PRONUNCIATION LESSONS ✦
Sound more like a native speaker and make it effortless for others to speak with you. We look at the components of good pronunciation like word stress, linked sounds, rhythm, intonation, and the sounds of the letters. There are two starting approaches: (1) We read articles together out loud and I correct you, or (2) we break down the components of good pronunciation and practice them one by one. You’ll gain confidence and skill in expressing yourself.

~ Want to boost your English overall?
✦ A MIX OF EVERYTHING ✦
You’ll like this type of lesson if you don’t have any particular objective at the moment, but you want to improve your English for your own self-development and future opportunities. We include a balanced mix of vocabulary, grammar, conversation, reading, writing, and listening, with particular attention to your weaknesses. These lessons help you reach an overall strong level.

~ Don't see yourself on this list?
✦ YOU CHOOSE ✦
Write me a message describing your goals. I’d be happy to talk with you about your unique needs.

  • ¿Dominas este idioma porque es tu lengua materna o porque un-a profe te ha dado ganas de aprenderla?

English is my strongest language. I was born in Slovakia and my family moved to Canada when I was a baby. I grew up as a native English speaker, studying and working and living through English, but being bilingual since childhood (through exposure to Slovak with family) also gave me insight into the differences between English and other languages. To this day, this helps me understand students' difficulties and find new and better ways to explain things.
  • Nombra un personaje que esté aún en vida, histórico o ficticio que es, según tú, la fiel representación de la cultura que enseñas.

I studied many historical figures in university that I drew inspiration and insight from. One name that comes to mind is Roman Jakobson. He was a Russian poet and linguist in the 20th century who came up with many revolutionary theories that are applied to phonology, translation, and languages. He loved language as an expression of thought between different people and approached it with an open mind. He wanted to observe it rather than try to force rules on it with a prescriptive approach.

I consider myself to share his passion and fascination for language, and I agree with this attitude because although we try to implement rules for the use of a language in order to establish order, it is also something that evolves by itself and I believe it is important to look at how a language is used in the real world, not just in textbooks. Sometimes grammar guides may say that something is "incorrect" but if all the native speakers in a country talk that way, can we really consider it wrong or invalid? I believe that the primary purpose of a language is to accurately communicate a message or a thought, and if it fulfills this purpose, then you are using it correctly. In this sense, it is just as important to look at how English is used in practice as in theory, and I always try to keep both in mind to give a complete picture to my students.
  • ¿Tiene este personaje una expresión, una frase, o un comportamiento que te divierte particularmente?

Jakobson famously said, "languages differentiate themselves not by what they can express, but by what they must express." This concept really struck me as fascinating, and has since helped me immensely as a teacher and to see English through the eyes of my students. What this quote means is that different languages have different elements that are either "necessary" or "optional" in a sentence. To give an example, in Spanish, articles (los, las, el, la) are used much more, but in English, they are not always needed, and in fact, if you use them, it may change the meaning of the sentence. This difference results in many Spanish speakers being confused about when to use articles and overusing articles where they are not needed.

Another example is that in Spanish, you must specify the gender of many nouns: "el doctor / el medico" or "la doctora / la medica", while English does not let you do this at all. Jakobson's thought is critical to understanding the lens through which different students learn English, the common mistakes and areas of confusion that result from it, and the ideal learning methods to overcome them.
  • ¿Por qué consideras que hablar este idioma puede ser importante (tanto desde el punto de vista escolar, como profesional o personal)?

I love the beauty of different languages and the diversity they bring to our world, but nobody can deny that English is the "international language of the world" and its influence is only growing everywhere. I think a language can help you with nearly any goal, whether it is assisting international customers on the phone, closing a business deal with confidence, making contacts during an academic research project, or speaking to other travel-lovers on a trip.
  • ¿Cuál es la principal dificultad de esta lengua y qué aspecto podría ayudar a aprenderla con más facilidad?

One of the scariest monsters under the bed for English is the pronunciation. Only a language whose pronunciation has no rhyme or reason can make a national competition out of spelling! I think it is important to keep pronunciation and spelling in mind as separate things when learning new words, and to practice them both actively and passively through frequent writing, listening, reading, and speaking.

Another one of the most challenging parts of English are phrasal verbs. There are so many of them and there is so little logic to them, that students or teachers often largely leave them out of their studies, but the truth is they are too big a part of the language to overlook, especially if your goal is to be fluent at conversation. Throughout my experience, I've developed my own activities and materials to allow a multidirectional approach that will hopefully make them easier to learn. One thing that is important to keep in mind, is that understanding phrasal verbs is much more important than using them, and thankfully, it is also much easier. And once you understand them, using them will eventually become natural.
  • Cuéntanos una anécdota de tu experiencia como profe o como alumna.

Some of my students achieve their dream thanks to English. I have helped people prepare for spending a year abroad, emigrating to Canada, getting into a university in London, and passing an exam that landed them their dream job. One of my students went on a month-long vacation after taking classes with me and later contacted me to tell me that thanks to me, he was able to get over his fear and embarrassment of speaking to other travelers and meet some of his current best friends on that trip. I love being there with my students through these tremendous accomplishments in their lives, and in some small way, they are my accomplishments too.
  • Ayúdanos a conocerte mejor, cuéntanos alguno de los viajes que has hecho.

My love of languages and different cultures leads me to travel quite frequently. In the past two years, I have spent several months each in Italy, Spain, Germany, and Slovakia.

Each stay somewhere is like an experience in one of my students' shoes, but in reverse. In a way, it lets me understand how to teach better: the difficulties I have in German, for example, are often the same ones a German student has in English.

One time, I went to a convenience store in Barcelona to buy scissors only to realize that I didn't know how scissors were called, and so told the shop assistant I was looking for "the thing you use to cut paper". During that same trip, I went to a language exchange event and met my best friend. During another trip, I traded English lessons for latin dance lessons and found one of my biggest hobbies.
  • ¿Qué te hace ser una superprof (aparte de dominar a la perfección tantos idiomas?

For me, this is not just a job, but also one of my greatest passions. I genuinely want my students to succeed, and their goals become my goals too. I cannot do everything for you: you have to put in the effort, the hard work, and the commitment, but if you try your very best, so will I, and together we can help you achieve anything you want.
